Kuonzan School of Nichiren Hongyoji Temple

Hongyoin Nichikai , the 2nd generation priest of Jakkoji in Kyoto, established this temple in 1617 (Genna 3). Nikkai was the 1st Kisei Honinbo in Japan, who instructed the 3rd Lord Toshitune. He gave Nikkai a property as a reward for instructing him in go, a Japanese game. Nikkai was under the protection of Honda Awanokami and Yokoyama Yamashiro no Kami. The temple was damaged by three fires but was reconstructed in 1903 (Meiji 36).
