Kyodo, the founder of this temple, was originally from Yamato. He established the temple in Tori village (current Katsura), in nanto, Toyama Prefecture, and named it Ganjobo. It was relocated to Kanazawa in 1787 (Tenmei 7). In 1876 (Meiji 9), it was allowed to have the official temple name of Ganjoji Temple.
