Originally this temple was called Tendai Shu Fushoji Temple, however, the priest Zenei visited Rennyo in Yoshizaki, Echizen, and was educated by him. Then, in 1489 (Entoku 1), he converted to Shinsyu, renaming his temple Joenji Temple. The 2nd priest Eijo and the 4th priest Keishu were granted awards for battling well in Eisho Ikki and the Ishiyama Battle in Osaka respectively.
