Higashi Chaya District was established in 1820 along the old Hokkoku Kaido Road running towards Kanazawa Castle, before crossing the Asanogawa River. The unique townscape consists of 2-storied houses with their entrances close together . On the first floor, red lattices called "bengara-koshi (or kimusuko)" are still used to maintain the streetscape appearance by containing businesses inside the houses. Nationally designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
