Seisonkaku Villa

  • Try to determine how the peaked roof is supported without columns along the wide and long veranda-like porch.
  • On the ceiling, wood plates with different grains fringed with Kaga's ultramarine are pasted alternately.
  • A formal samurai house entryway
The 13th lord of Kaga Domain, Nariyasu Maeda, built the villa at the end of the Edo Period (mid 1800’s) as a retirement house for his mother. The luxurious and gorgeous audience room for public use is astonishing. The upstairs private space is designed in the playful style of a tea-ceremony arbor. The villa has much to offer visitors, including a tea room, Kura (storehouse) with thick earthen walls, a garden, and a formal samurai house entryway. Visitors may enjoy being lost in thought as if they were family members of the feudal lord.
